Volkhov Town coat of arms and flag, the

The Volkhov Town's coat of arms and flag are the official approved symbols of the Municipal Union “Gorod Volkhov” (the town of Volkhov), now it is the urban-type settlement of Volkhov (the coat of arms was approved with the decision of the municipality of the town of Volkhov of 28 February 1997, No.34; the flag was approved with the decision of the municipality of the town of Volkhov of 26 November 1997, No.77). Heraldic description of the coat of arms: “Within crossed dark red and azure shield there is a silver wall with undulating lower edge without merlons and with two towers, each of them has two merlons at the edges and with azure arches. The golden winged fire sword is above the wall, and the silver star with 4 rays covered by a dark red wheel is below the wall.” The silver wall with azure arches symbolizes the Volkhov Power Dam that is the main enterprise of the town. The sword symbolizes the patronage of Saint Arhistratig Archangel Michael to the Town. The star (“Wind Rose”) with the wheel symbolize the importance of the town as the big transport junction. The flag is a rectangle white sheet in the ratio of height to length 2:3. In the red square canton (which has a side as a half of the flag’s height) there is the yellow vertical unsheathed sword with the handle pointing down that is surrounded with “polet” (yellow spread up wings that are intersected behind the handle of the sword). Along the flag’s down edge there is a blue horizontal line with undulating up edges; the width of stripe at the highest point of the wave is 1/5 from flag’s height. Above the stripe there are five similar blue traversed arch windows; the foundation of every window is located above the down edge at length of ¼ flag’s height; the each window’s height , according imaginary perpendicular which is drawn from basis of the window to the highest point of arch is 1/6 of flag’s height. The coat of arms was registered in the State Heraldic Register of the Russian Federation under No.181 and the flag was registered under the No. 225.
