SERTOLOVO, a town in Vsevolozhsk District. Population: 38,400 (70% are the military and their family members.). It is located at a portion of the Scandinavia international highway. The ring motor road extends close to the town lines. 6 km away from S. is Pesochnoye Railway Station (St. Petersburg-Vyborg branch.) For the first time, Sirotala village was mentioned in the Novgorod scribe roll of Vodskaya Pyatina under 1500. Later it was called Sertolovo (Finnish ‘Sertola.’) The toponym is of the Baltic Finnish origin, probably from the words siro ‘fine’ and talo – ‘house’ or ‘estate.’ No data is available on the ethnic structure of the population at that time; probably they were Izhorians. In the 19th – early 20th century, Ingermanlandian Finns lived in S. In 1936, a military town was built in S., not far from the Finnish border (before 1939). At the same time, compulsory eviction of local residents started to clean up the frontier zone. In the 1950s-1970s, intense housing construction started in S. In 1977, the military communities Sertolovo-1, Sertolovo-2 and Chornaya Rechka (up to this day they are three separate communities of S.) were united into Sertolovo workers’ settlement. In 1996–2005 it was an independent municipal entity, and in 1998 it got the status of a town. The population of S. greatly increased in the 1990s (it was 14,600 in 1989) due to military units stationed there, and housing provided to retired military. The most important industrial enterprises are the Sertolovo Industrial Combine, Reinforced Concrete Product Factory of the RF Ministry of Defense, and TsBI Ltd. Up to 10,000 residents of S. live and study in St. Petersburg. S. has an Officers’ Club for 800 guests, municipal school of arts, and three universal libraries. Several newspapers are published, in particular the “Peterburgsky Rubezh” and “Sertolovo and Environs.” The wooden church of St. Sergius of Radonezh was built in 2002, and the church of St. Tsar Nicholas the Martyr. and St. Traritsa Alexandra the Martyr is under construction.
