THE RETYUN RURAL LIBRARY (Retyun Village, Luga District). The first library in the Retyun Volost was opened in 1887. In the Soviet period it was located in Shiltsevo Village and worked as a reading room. In the years of the Great Patriotic War the library was destroyed, then it was restored in 1950. Since 1980 it worked as Retyun Rural Village. Between 1977 and 2005 the library was part of centralized library network with the status of a branch. Since 2006 it has been a structural division of the village culture-and-leisure centre. The library fund numbers 7500 items, with around 700 readers. The number of visits is over 7,500 a year, with over 20,000 loans annually. The library disposes of documents from personal archive of V. T. Korniyenko, a regional studies expert: authentic documents, guide books, newspaper cuttings and photographs related to the history of Luga Krai. In 1997 the library organized a mini-exhibition representing the interior of a Russian peasant house. The management of JSC “Rassvet” provided the premises where the Local History Museum of peasant everyday life was opened in 2002. The museum now runs “Rukodel’nitsa” (The Needlewoman) club for girls who want to do embroidery and “Klub tyoplykh druzheskikh vstretch” (The Club of Warm and Friendly Meetings) for elderly people who keep Russian folklore traditions. The clubs cooperate in arranging folklore festivals and organizing exhibitions of decorative art.
