"The Tree of Life", a vepses festival

“DEREVO ZHIZNY” (“TREE OF LIFE”), Veps festival – a holiday of Veps culture. Veps name is “Elon Pu”. The festival was organized in 1987 in Vinnitsy Village, Podporozhye District, one of the centres of Veps culture, on the initiative of the Culture Administration under the Leningrad Oblast Executive Committee and the Leningrad Oblast Science and Methodology Centre of Folk Art and Education. The festival is annually held in the second half of June. The participants of the festival are delegations from Veps districts of the Leningrad Oblast, Vologda Oblast and Karelian Republic, folk groups from different regions of the Russian Federation and Estonian Republic, who represented the art of Finno-Ugric peoples, closely related to the Veps. The framework of the festival includes a fair of folk trades and crafts, exhibitions of painting and displays of traditional Veps culture. During the first Veps festival in Ozera Village, Podporozhye District (ref. Ozera, a group of Veps villages) a scientific and practical conference, dedicated to the issues of preservation of Veps language and culture, was organized. The festival became traditional and is held in different settlements of Podporozhye District with Veps citizens, including Ozera Village, Kurba Settlement, Nemzhe Village. Apart from the All Veps festival in Podporozhye District, same name local festivities are organized in the most picturesque settlements of other districts of the Leningrad Oblast.
