Subject / Art

“ROLEVYE IGRY” (“ROLE-PLAY GAMES/RPG”). Live games, the game participants some time live the life of chosen characters. The sources of RPG scenarios – history, literature, cinema, computer strategies, Japanese cartoons, etc. Favourite subjects – history up to the Late Middle Ages, myths and fantasy literature, you can also come across modern, science fiction or life after nuclear war subjects. RPG participants (mostly young people) make costumes according to needed style, armour and weapons (with no respect to historical accuracy). For big RPG (more than 200-300 participants) people can build some fortifications: wooden picket fence (sometimes two-storied), observation tower, dig ditches and moats, etc. In St.Petersburg RPG started in the beginning of 1990s, but field RPG (in the open air on the relatively vast territory – “training area”) were held on the Leningrad Oblast territory. The first such kind RPG was held on April 13th - 15th in 1991 near Railway Station “67 km Platform” (to the south of Sosnovo Settlement, Priozersk District). During the season about 20 RPG, lasting for 2-4 days, and with about 20 to 200 participants (local game) or about 1000 participants (if some of them come from other towns) are held. The most significant RPGs are: game series “Dikiy Zapad” (“Wild West”) (in the style of “western-vaudeville”, since 1998), based on computer game «Fallout» (“life after nuclear war”, 1999), game series “Piraty Karibskogo Morya” (“Pirates of the Caribbean”) (since 2000), “Cyberpank” (based on W.Gibson’s Worlds, 2001), “Chicago 1925” (2001), “Tsar Tishaishy” (“Peaceful Tsar”) (Moscow XVII c., 2004), “Kalevala” (2005). Places for RPGs are, as a rule, chosen in the forest not far from water: near Zakhodskoye Settlement, Kannel'yarvi Railway Station and Petyayarvi Railway Station, on Vuoksa Lake, Shapki Settlement, etc. From the end of 1990s to the beginning of 2000s new RPG teams started to appear in the Leningrad Oblast towns. The most active RPG team is from Tikhvin Town, they held their own RPGs (for example, “Balkansky Sonnik” (“The Balkan Dream Book”), 2003).
