Leningrad Society of the Local Region Study, the

The Leningrad Society of the Local Region Study (LOIMK), a local history study public organization. It was founded in the early 1920s. In 1922 LOIMK together with the Moscow Society of the Local History Study were included in the Central Agency of the Local History Study (TsBK) at the Russian Academy of Sciencies (from 1925 it was under the jurisdiction of the Narkompros (People's Commissariat of Education) of the RSFSR). There were 247 members in the society and it had branches in Petrograd, Trotsk (Gatchina), Lodeynoye Pole and a section of young local fistorians at the station of Ozerki of the Pargolovo Volost of the Petrograd/Leningrad Gubernia. P.E. Vasilkovsky, I.M. Grevs, D.A. Zolotarev, N.S. Rozov and others took part in the society work. In 1927 the society published two volumes of "Trudi" ("Works") where works on natural-science, local history, ethnography were published. LOIMK members' works were published in periodicals of the Central Agency of the Local History Study (Ts BK): "Krayevedeniye" ("The Local History Study", 1923-1929) and "Izvestiya Tsentralnogo Byuro Krayevedeniya" ("Proceedings of the Central Agency of the Local History Study", 1925-1929). The Society was liquidated according to the Leningrad Oblast Local Historians second congress decree in the connection with the iquidation of the local history study movement in the USSR in December of 1929. Active members of the organization were subjected to repression from the late 1920s till the early 1930s.
