The Society for the Protection of History and Culture Monuments, the Leningrad oblast branch. It is a structural department of the All-Russian Society for the Protection of History and Culture Monuments (VOOPIiK) which is a mass voluntary public organizartion being on self-financing and working in Russia territory. The All-Russian Society for the Protection of History and Culture Monuments (VOOPIiK) was founded on the basis of the RSFSR Council of Ministers decree (decree No. 882 of 27.07.1965). The Constituent Assembly was in July 1966. The All-Russian Society for the Protection of History and Culture Monuments (VOOPIiK) structural departments in the Russian Federation subjects are regional branches which work on the basis of the united Regulations registered by the Ministry of Justice (the registration certificate No. 340 of 24.10.2002). The All-Russian Society for the Protection of History and Culture Monuments (VOOPIiK) has the right to coordinate projects of building the settlements that had the history and culture monuments and projects concerning to monuments or their protecting zones. The society forms the careful attitude to monuments, holds theme lectures and excursions, organizes exhibitions, popularizes the history and culture heritage objects, finances the protection and restoration of history and culture monuments. The All-Russian Society for the Protection of History and Culture Monuments (VOOPIiK) has its own printing organ. It is the anthology "Pamyatniki Otechestva" ("Monuments of the Fatherland") which has been published since 1980 by the two-three instalments per every year. During the Soviet period the VOOPIiK work was supported by the state, now in addition to tax earnings the society exists using the expense of charitable endowments, sponsors' funds and the revenue of the own commercial activity. During 1970-1980s 10 million people were members of VOOPIiK, more then 3 thousand monuments were salvaged and restored. Fortresses of Oreshek and Koporye were the most large objects of the restoration in the Leningrad Oblast. Chapels in villages of Krasny Bor and Baly Bor of the Boksitogorsk district were restored. LOO VOOPIK (the Leningrad Oblast Branch of the All-Russian Society for the Protection of History and Culture Monuments) Council is placed in St. Petersburg. A.N. Kirpichnikov, the Head of the Presidium of LOO VOOPIiK, is a member of the Presidium of the Central Council of VOOPIiK at the same time. In 2000 LOO VOOPIiK took active part in the preparation for the programme of the restored and research works in the connection with the 1250th anniversary of the foundation of Staraya Ladoga. In 2002 LOO VOOPIiK together with the Leningrad Oblast Government and the Material Culture Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciencies published the collection "Kulturnoye naslediye Rossiyskogo gosudarstva" ("Culture Heritage of Russia", issue No. 3). Between 30 June and 2 July 2002 the International scientific and practical conference "Ladoga and Historians of Russian State System and Culture" was held in Staraya Ladoga under the aegis of YuNESKO. LOO VOOPIiK took active part in organizing the conference. In 2004 in Tver City the film "Where the Russian Land Was from?" about Staraya Ladoga of the film-studio "Luga-film" became a winner of the 26th All-Russian film festival of amateur video films devoted to the history and culture heritage and traditions of people of the Russian Federation (the Central Council of VOOPIiK was an organizer of the festival). In 2004 the social and political newspaper "Gatchinskaya Pravda" ("The Gatchina Truth") was awarded the second prize of the competition of publications devoted to problems of protecting history and culture monuments. The competition was organized by the Central Council of VOOPIiK and the Writers Union of Russia in the North-West federal okrug. Authors of the local history works published in the Leningrad Oblast district newspapers - "Krasnaya Zvezda" ("The Red Star", Priozersk Town), "Baltiysky Luch" ("The Baltic Beam", Lomonosov Town), "Ladoga" (Kirovsk), "Vostochny bereg" ("The East Bank", Kingisepp), "Vremya" ("The Time", Kingisepp), "Gatchinskaya pravda" ("The Gatchina Truth") - were awarded too.
