Krakau, Aleksandr Ivanovich (1817 - 1888), an architect

Aleksandr Ivanovich Krakau (1817 - 1888), an architect, artist. During 1826-1839 he learned in the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts. K.A. Ton was his teacher. During 1843-1850 A.I. Krakau studied the Renaissance architecture in Italy. In 1850 A.I. Krakau became an academician of architecture and a professor of the Academy of Arts in 1871. He took part in building the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour in Moscow. Most significant Krakau's works: a building of the Baltiysky (Baltic) Ralway Station (1855-1857), the mansion of Baron A.L. Shtiglits in Angliyskaya (English) Embankment (1859-1863), the building of the Designing College of Baron A.L. Shtiglits (1878-1881). In 1873-1875 the Church of the Holy Trinity was built on Krakau's project in Ivangorod Town. The church was the family burial-vault of the Barons Shtiglitses. A.I. Krakau was buried in the Smolenskoye Orthodox cemetery in St. Petersburg.
