The Medvedkovo Monastery of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker (the town of Staraya Ladoga). It was founded not later than in the 15th century on the left bank of the Volkhov River on the peninsula nearby the river mouth. The terrain feature of Medvedkovo was mentioned in agreements of Novgorod residents of the 13th century as the last settlement of their estates. The monastery was used a place of break and the guiding point for travellers on the way "From Varangians to Greeks". The monastery was devoted to St. Nicholas Wonderworker, the patron of travellers. In the late 16th century 30 monks lived in the monastery, there was the stone cathedral of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker; later (until 1628) the stone refectory with the church of St. John the Theologian was built. In 1582-1583 the monastery was suffered from an armed attack of "German people". It was renewed in 1584. In January 1611 the church became the place of the battle of the Government of Semiboyrshchina detachments and interventionists; in 1612 the monastery was brought to ruin by Swedes, the hegumen was imprisoned. In 1653 the monastery was included into the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery. In 1704 it was closed by Peter I, monks were moved to the Staraya Ladoga Monastery of St. John the Baptist. The monastery territory was surrounded with the earthworks and transformed in a fortress; the monastery cathedral became the main cathedral of the new town of New Ladoga.
