Sergy (Ivan Nikolayevich Stragorodsky; 1867–1944), Patriarch. He graduated from the seminary of Nizhny Novgorod (1886) and the Ecclesiastical Academy in St Petersburg (1890; Doctor of Theology). On 30 January 1890 he was professed as a monk, on 21 May 1890 he was ordained to the hieromonk. He worked at the Japan Ecclesiastical Mission, in the Ecclesiastical Academy of St Petersburg and in the Ecclesiastical Academy of Moscow , he worked also at the Embassy church in Athens. He was conferred the dignity of the archimandrite. He was Magister of Theology and the author of several theological works. From July 1899 he was the principal of the seminary in St Petersburg and from 24 January 1901 he was the principal of the Ecclesiastical Academy of St Petersburg . From 25 November 1901 he was the bishop of Yamburg and the suffragan of the Eparchy of St Petersburg. From 6 October 1905 he was the archbishop of Finland and Vyborg. He assisted to the dissemination of the Orthodoxy among the Korelia people, he organized the mission at the Cathedral of the Transfiguration in Vyborg and opened the Karelia Orthodox Community in the village of Vidlitsy of the Olonets Gubernia (1907). He took part in the organizing of the Lintulskaya Community, time after time he visited Valaam Island and Konevets Island. From 1911 to 1917 he was a member of the Holy Synod and from 1913 he was the chairman of its Educational Committee. In August 1917 he was elected the archbishop of Vladimir and from November he was elected the Metropolitan. From 1924 he was the Metropolitan of Nizhny Novcgorod and from 1925 he was deputy of the Patriarchal Locum Tenens. In 1927 he, with members of the Holy Synod, published ""Epistle to pastors and the faithful of the Russian Church"" about the loyalty of the Russian Orthodox Church to Soviet Power. In 1934 he was the Metropolitan of Moscow and Kolomna, from 1937 he was the Patriarchal Locum Tenens. From 1941to 1943 he was in the evacuation in Ulyanovsk. On 8 September 1943 he was elected the Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia during the Assembly of Hierarchs. He died in Moscow and was buried in the Cathedral of the Epiphany.
