MATE, Vasily Vasilyevich (Wilghelm Wilghelmovich) (1856 – 1917), artist, teacher. He was born and lived for some time in his father’s estate in the suburbs of Lyuban Town. In 1870 he moved to St.Petersburg. In the period 1870-75 he studied at the High School of Painting at the Emperor’s Art Encouragement Society, in the period 1875-80 – at the Imperial Academy of Arts. In the period 1880-83, receiving Imperial scholarship from the Academy, Mate trained in Paris, then in Germany, the Netherlands, Great Britain. He was a master of portrait, out of his 278 engravings 225 pieces are portraits. In the period 1884–1909 Mate worked as a teacher at Baron A.L. Stiglitz’ Central Drawing School ; in the period 1894–1917 – in engraving class at the Imperial Academy of Arts ; since 1911 he worked at the High School of Painting at the Emperor’s Art Encouragement Society. Among his students one can find A.P. Ostroumova-Lebedeva , P.A. Shillingovsky. He trained I.I. Levitan, I.Y. Repin, V.A. Serov, B.M. Kustodiev in engraving technique. In 1899 he became an academician of the Imperial Academy of Arts. Mate contributed to magazines “Vsemirnaya Illustratsiya” (“World Illustration”), “Pchela” (“Bee”), “Russkaya Starina” (“Russian Old Times”), etc., he illustrated books. Mate died in Petrograd. In the end of 1880s together with I.Y. Repin he several times visited I.N. Kramskoy’s and I.I. Shishkin’s country houses in Siversky Urban Settlement. Kruzhnov, Yuri Nikolayevich
