SEROV, Valentin Aleksandrovich (1865–1911), an artist. In 1874-80 he was taught painting by I.Y. Repin. In 1880 he entered St.Petersburg Imperial Academy of Arts, P.P. Chistyakov’s class. From 1885 he studied art in Italy and Holland. From 1887 he lived mostly in Moscow, where he painted pictures which gained him great popularity: “Devochka s persikamy” (“A Girl with Peaches”) (1887), “Devushka, Osveshchennaya Solntsem” (“A Girl Lit by the Sun”) (1889). In 1894 Serov joined the Circle of Itinerants (Association of mobile art exhibitions - Peredvizhniki ). In 1899 he joined Association “Mir Iskusstva” (“World of Art”). In the period 1897–1909 he worked as a teacher at Moscow College of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture. Serov obtained recognition as a master of portrait (“Z.N. Yusupova”, 1900-02; “Ida Rubinstein”, 1910, etc.). In the period 1890s–1900s Serov painted watercolor series (scenes from the times of Peter I, Elizabeth Petrovna ). After his trip to Greece in 1907 Serov took a great interest in Greek Mythology. In the period of revolution 1905-07 he drew several sharp political caricatures. In 1890s Serov together with I.Y. Repin visited Vyborg Town and its suburbs. In 1901 he bought a plot with a house in Ino Village (modern Privetninskoye Settlement , Vyborg District) on the coast of the Gulf of Finland, where up to 1911 he spent summers (the house is partly depicted in Serov’s picture “Finlyandsky Dvorik” (“Finnish Yard”), 1902). In Ino Village he painted pictures “Kupanye Loshady” (“Bathing of the Horse”) (1905), “Odysseus and Navzikaya” (1910), “Pokhishcheniye Evropy” (“Abduction of Europe”) (1910), etc. Kruzhnov, Yuri Nikolayevich
