FRENZ, Rudolf Rudolfovich (1888–1956), an artist. He was born in Mariyengof near Gatchina Town into a family of animal painter R.F. Frenz. In the period 1910-18 he studied (off and on) at the St.Petersburg Imperial Academy of Art in N.S. Samokish’s studio of battle painting. In the period 1918-26 he worked as a painter and a teacher at the Institute of Decorative Art under People’s Commissariat of Education. Frenz was a member of Association “Obshchina Khudozhnikov” (“Community of Artists”) (1922-25), Associstion of Artists of Revolutionary Russia (АKRR; 1924). In 1929 he became an associate professor and then a professor at the Imperial Academy of Arts. Frenz worked in the field of theatre scenery and applied arts, he worked on posters and city holiday decorations, he painted genre pictures, landscapes and watercolors. Frenz is an author of historical, revolutionary and battle paintings. He created diorama “Geroicheskaya Oborona Stalingrada” (“Heroic Defence of Stalingrad City”) (1946) with a group of Academy students. Frenz was buried in St.Petersburg among the Literatorskie Mostki at the Volkovo Cemetery. He lived in his parents’ home (5, Krainyaya st., Gatchina Town) in the period 1888–1929.
