The Church of the Intercession of the Mother of God (Gatchina Town)

The Church of the Intercession of the Mother of God (Gatchina Town, 7 Krugovaya Street). The stone church in the Russian style of the 17th c was built in the Huntsmen District (Marienburg) in 1886-1888 (architect I.А. Stefanits, design by the architect D.I. Grimm). It was consecarted on 20 November 1888 in the presence of Emperor Alexander III. Moscow Artist N.M. Safonov painted 21 icons for the iconostasis, the artist P. Fisher painted the interior in the Byzantine style. Firstly the church belonged to the Life-Guards Huntsmen Regiment then it was attached to the Court department ("Emperor Hunt"). 15 June 1917 the independent parish was organized. The church was closed in July 1923 and in April 1933 it was closed completely according to the decision of the Cental Executive Committee. It was opened on 30 November 1941, Ioann Pirkin was the priest, the temporary iconostasis was made instead of the destroyed one. Priest Vasily Apraksin was the dean of the church from March 1942 to April 1944 (he was subjected to repressions in 1944, in 1955 he was released and lived in Gatchina until his death). In the beginning of the 1950s the permanent iconostasis, transferred from the Leningrad Ecclesiastical Academy, was installed . Archpriest Petr Belavsky was the dean in 1955-1976, the restoration work was made under his management; in 1976-1988 Archimandrite Kirill (Nachis),spiritual father of the Leningrad Ecclesiastical schools, was the dean of the church. The next restoration work was made in 1989 for the Millenary of the Baptism of Rus. The Sunday school works at the church and the parish newspaper "God's Earth" is published from October 1993 The Icon of the Mother of God "The Seeking of the Lost" from the Rakovsky Monastery of the Samara District,The Kazan Icon of the Mother of God, the Icon "Tsarina of All Things", the Icon of St Anna Kashinskaya, Martyr with particles of her holy relics, the Icon of St Catherine, Martyr with particles of her holy relics, the Icon of St Alexis, Metropolitan of Moscow, the Icon of St Nicholas the Wondermaker are the main objects of worship.
