The Transfiguration Church (Orlino Village, Gatchina District)

The Transfiguration Church (the Gatchina District, the village of Orlino, 82 Tsentralny (Central) Street). The church in Orlinsky Spassky Pogost was firstly mentioned in 1499. In the 17th century under the Sweden power the church was destroyed. The new wooden church was constructed in about 1717. During 1808-1809 a stone one-domed Classicism style church for 600 people was built at its place for the money of Countess A.S. Protasova. The church was consecrated on 8 July 1808. In 1903 the Brotherhood in the name of the Transfiguration of Christ was established at the church. The priest Vladimir Smirnov, the church dean from 1911 to 1938, was shot. The church was closed officially in 1940, it was adapted for a community centre. The church worked from autumn 1941 until October 1944. The priest Ioann Suslin, the dean of the church, was shot by Germans in 1942. The church was closed the second time according to the resolution of the Council for the Russian Orthodox Church Affairs of 8 May 1945, it was used for a warehouse of agricultural products. In 1953 the icons of Archangels Michael and Cabriel by V.L. Borovikovsky were taken out. After 1964 the church was adapted for a rural club. From 1995 the church has worked again. During 1991-2004 the building was being restored.
