NIKOLSKOYE, a town in Tosno District. Population: 17,300. It is situated on the Tosna River. 7 km north of N. is Ivanovskaya railway station on the St. Petersburg-Volkhovstroy line, and 6 km south-west of it, Sablino station on the St. Petersburg-Moscow line. A motor road connects N. to Otradnoye Town and has access to the St. Petersburg-Moscow highway. The name was given in honor of the local church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker existing since 1716. The settlement was founded in the 1st quarter of the 18th c. by peasants who were moved from Lyublino and Mozhaisk Uyezds, Moscow Gubernia, in the place of Kazola and Merkele waste plots. The residents of N. made and supplied construction materials (sand, rubble stone, clay, bricks, timber) for St. Petersburg’s needs. In the 1920s, there were abt. 250 households in N. The proximity to Leningrad, favorable transport situation, and deposits of clay and quartz sand were prerequisites for fast industrial development of the settlement in the post-war period. In 1958, N. was given the status of a workers’ settlement, and in 1990, of a town. From its foundation, N. developed as a settlement with regular street development. Currently, the town extends in the meridian direction along the banks of the Tosna. Most of its buildings were erected in the 2nd half of the 20th century. In the environs of N. was Pustynka, the estate of A. K. Tolstoy that was visited by I. S. Turgenev, A. A. Fet, I. A. Goncharov, and the brothers Zhemchuzhnikov. N. has a culture center with a folk choir, theatrical company, “Zadorinka” model dancing ensemble, brass band, “Live Sound” and “Mirror” vocal ensembles, fine arts studio, “Break Dance” teenager group, club of war and labor veterans, “Lyre” club of music lovers, and “Scheet” military/patriotic club.
