TOSNO, town, adm. center of Tosno District. Population: 38,700.It is situated on the banks of the Tosna River (most of the town is on the river’s left bank.) Its was named by the river’s name having an Baltic or Slav origin. The town is at the crossing of railway routes to St. Petersburg, Moscow, and Narva. The St. Petersburg-Moscow highway extends via T. “Tosna Matuyevo” village was first mentioned in the 1499/1500 scribe roll of Vodskaya Pyatina. The settlement was situated at the crossing of the dry-land route from Novgorod to the Karelian Isthmus and the water route to the Neva via the Tosna. From 1611 till the early 18th c. it belonged to Sweden. In 1714, T. became a post coachmen’s settlement on the road from St. Petersburg to Moscow. A. N. Radischev had a stop at the local post-house of Yam-Tosna, which he mentioned in his book “A Journey from St. Petersburg to Moscow.” In the 19th century, the town was visited by A. S. Pushkin, A. A. Alyabiev, A. A. Bestuzhev (Marlinsky), A. I. Herzen, and N. A.Nekrasov. In 1849, a railway was built across T., and most of the able-bodied population were its employees by the break of the 19th – 20th cc. In 1930, it became the center of a new-established district, and in 1935, a workers’ settlement. In WWII (from 1941 till the early 1944) it was occupied by the Germans and heavily destroyed. On Feb. 1, it was granted the status of a town. T. has the district Palace of Culture, a children’s school of arts, Tosno Central District Library, children’s library and town library, and Tosno museum of the local history . Three newspapers are published, “Tosnensky Vestnik” among them, and the “Teleradio Tosno” TV company broadcasts. The Socio-Cultural Complex (SCC) “Kosmonavt” comprises a cinema hall for 600 seats and a children’s amusement park. On the basis of SCC, exhibitions are held and amateur companies perform. In 1997, the “Izge Yul” (“Good Way”) ethnic Tatar society was established in the town to work for preservation of the traditional culture. In June 2003, an oblast festival of brass bands was held in T.
