VAZHINI, an urban settlement in Podporozhye District. Population: 3,300. It is situated at the confluence of the Vazhinka and Svir rivers, north-east of Svir railway station on the Volkhovstroy-Murmansk line. The name originates from the Vazhinka River, a right-hand tributary of the Svir. V. is connected to the district center with motor roads and railroads. There is a wharf on the Svir River. A narrow-gage railway line extends north-eastwards up to Lake Rizhnoye. Vazhini became known in the 16th c. as a village. The status of an urban settlement was granted in 1970 due to subdivision of Vazhini Rural Soviet. V. consists of several parts, with Olesova, Terekhova, and Laptevschina Wharf located on the Svir’s left bank, Skuratovo and Melekhovo on the right bank of the Svir and the Vazhinka, and Yurievskaya, Ust-Boyarskaya, Novy Posyolok, Rebyachye, and Reida on the right bank of the Svir and left bank of the Vazhinka. V. has a culture center, library, and children’s school of music. On the bank of the Svir there is the Church of the Resurrection dated 17th century, the oldest active wooden church that has retained its original interiors, in particular a three-level iconostasis.
