SOVETSKY (Johannes [Finnish] before 1948), an urban settlement in Vyborg District. Population: 6,600. It is situated on the coast of the Gulf of Finland. The name Johannes is related to the Lutheran parish of St. Johannes (known from the 17th c.; a stone church was built in 1888.) After the Vyborg-Koivisto (Primorsk) railway branch was opened in 1925, the station and the adjoining localities (Vaahtola village etc.) were named Johannes. In 1918-40 it belonged to the independent Finland, from 1940, a workers’ settlement in Karelo-Finnish Republic, and since 1944, in Leningrad Oblast. In 1948, it was named after Hero of the Soviet Union pilot M. A. Sovetsky who was killed in action in 1944. Since 1926, a pulp and paper mill has been operating in the settlement (currently Vyborgskaya Tsellyuloza OJSC.) S. has a culture center (where the circus studio "Mechta" functions), and a library. Its school of music is one of the leading ones in Leningrad Oblast (established in 1957), with abt. 150 children studying. The school’s students received 300 diplomas at competitions of various levels.
