Rakhkonen, Aleksandr (1841-1877), a literary man

Rahkonen, Aleksandr (1841, Ykspaa settlement of the Vyborg Gubernia; now it is Seleznyevo settlement -1877, Vyborg Town), a writer, teacher. Rahkonen was born in the family of a miller. After the father's death, in 1849 the moved into Vyborg Town. In 1862 Rahkonen entered the Helsingfors University. Rahkonen took a great interest in ideas of people education, was a member of a group of teachers and students who read common lectures, he advocated the expansion of using field of Finnish. In summer of 1863 Rahkonen travelled in parishes Yaaski (see the article "Lesogorsky") and Antrea (see the article "Kamennogorsk") studing peasants' life and people customs. In Antrea Rahkonen carried on studing his research in summer of 1870. He gave public lectures in Helsingfors and Vyborg on natural scientific, historic and ethnographic subjects. Rahkonen started to to practise literature, translate into Finnish. He was the author-editor of two collections "Komari" («Saaskia», 1865 and 1867). Rahkonen became the first translator of Prince Yu. Runeberg's "Rasskazi praporshchika Stolya" ("Stories of ensign Stol"). This work had played the important role in forming the national self-consciousness of Finns. Extracts from this book in translation from Swedish and Rahkonen's poems were published in the collections. From 1869 Rahkonen lived in Vyborg Town. In 1870 he taught at the Pilot College in Uuras (Vysotsk), in 1871-1872 he taught at the Vyborg Marine School and in 1873-1874 he worked at a Finnish-Swedish church school in St. Petersburg. From 1875 Rahkonen lived in Vyborg Town, he made translations of educational books from Swedish in Finnish, wrote poems and translated W. Shakespeare's works. He is the author of several plays. Rahkonen was buried at the Ristimyaki cemetery in Vyborg Town (the grave was not survived). Chistyakov, Anton Yuryevich
