VOYSKOVITSI, a settlement in Gatchina District. Population: 3900. It is located at the railway station of the same name on the Gatchina-Ivangorod branch. V. is mentioned in Novgorod’s scribe roll of 1499/1500. Based at the settlement are Voyskovitsi Breeding Poultry Farm JSC, Concrete Product Plant No. 1, and Foroster LLC timber processing facility. It has a children’s school of arts, culture center, and library. In the early phase of WWII, there were dogged battles near V. with German troops going to Leningrad. On Aug. 19, 1941 in one of actions (so-called “Voyskovitsi Action”) the crew of the KV-1 tank led by Sen. Lt. Z. G. Kolobanov destroyed 22 German tanks and two antitank guns. The poem “Tankman Zinovy Kolobanov” is dedicated to this feat (1941). A monument (IS-2 tanks) was installed in the battlefield in 1985.
