Shlisselburg Fortress "Oreshek", a museum

Subject / Museums

Shlisselburg (Schlusselburg) Fortress "Oreshek", a museum (Shlisselburg Town, Oreshek Island), is a branch of the State museum of the history of Sankt Petersburg from 1965. The museum was founded in 1925 and it was presented for visitors, as a branch of the Leningrad Museum of Revolution, in August of 1928. The All-Union Political Convicts Society Shlisselburg friendly association took part in the creating of historico-revolutionary exposition, former fortress prisoners (N.A. Morozov, M.V. Novorussky, M.F. Frolenko, V.A. Simonovich, D.A. Trilisser, R.Z. Margolin, P.S. Mokrov and others) often worked as guides. In 1939 the museum closed and all exhibits were brought into Leningrad. The restoration of the destroyed during World War II fortress was started in the 1960s (with participation of the Leningrad History Museum manager L.N. Belova, the architect-restorers V.M. Savkov, A.A. Sementovskaya, E.G. Arapova). The Old Prison in the citadel, Czar's (Gate) Tower with gratings, Golovin's (On-Corner) Tower with the fortress wall parts siding with it and the bulwark of the 18th century were restored following the New Prison building and the King Town. The remains of the Novgorod fortress of 1352 were descovered as a result of the archeological dig (under the direction of A.N. Kirpichnikov) in 1968-1969, later they were established as the museum. The ruins of the Cathedral of the Birth of John the Baptist, destroyed with the German gun-fire, became the centre of the memorial devoted to defenders of the fortress during 1941-1943 built by the architect I.D. Bilibin, the sculptors G.D. Yastrebenetsky and A.G. Dyema in 1985. The museum expositions include restored military casemates of the 16th century, wards and punishment cells of the Old and New prisons where materials on the Shlisselburg fortress history are presented.
