Resettlements of the 1945 - 1950s

Subject / Ethnic culture

Resettlements of the 1945 - 1950s were migrations which were caused by political (eviction of some categories of citizens who were considered as unreliable, including the activities for cleaning up the frontier) and economical (the necessity of labour power industrial intake) factors. On the territory of the Leningrad Oblast mass migrations began after the Soviet Finnish War (1930-40) when the previous population of the districts, which were passed to the USSR, were evacuated to Finland by the Finnish government. Migrants, who were registered in other regions of Russia, came on the territory of the present Vyborg and Priozersk districts in 1940. After the beginning of the Great Patriotic War in summer 1941 they were evacuated. Finnish and German population of the Leningrad Oblast were deported (see Ethnic Deportation). A new phase of settling the Karelian Isthmus began in 1945 after the decree of the State Defence Committee dated 15 January No 7326/s "About Resettlement of the Farms of the Peasants - Members of Collective Farms to the Districts of the Karelian Isthmus Which Are Parts of the Leningrad Oblast". Recruiting of the population to the deserted territories in the environs of Leningrad was organized according to the decree of the USSR Council of Ministers No 155 dated 27 January 1948 "About Resettlement of Members of Collective Farms to the Collective Farms of Suburban Districts of the Leningrad Oblast" (the residents of Vladimir, Ryazan, Gorky, Yaroslavl oblasts were planned to be resettled). In the spring 1948 to the Leningrad Oblast 11693 people came (2185 families), 8198 people from them were settled on the territory of Ingermanlandia, all the rest were settled on the Karelian Isthmus. Afterwards, a part of migrants who were dissatisfied with the conditions of their life in the Leningrad Oblast returned back. Organized resettlement was going on even in the 1950s.
