Podborovye, settlement
Podborovye, settlementIt appeared at the railway station during the construction of the St. Petersburg-Vologda railroad in the early 20th c. In the Soviet period it was developed as a local center of timber processing and agricultural production. It is divided into two unequal parts by the railroad. North of the tracks, the smaller part of P. is situated, and south of them, the larger one. Until the 1960s, the settlement’s houses were wooden, erected close to Podborovye railway station. Later, when the Podborovsky Soviet farm was established, the southern part grew as a type head estate was built with multi-storey residential houses and social/cultural facilities. During WWII, “The Road of Life” extended close to P. Those events are memorized with a monument, a ZIS-5 truck (“one-and-half ton”) placed upon a pedestal. In the northern part of P. there is an obelisk on the common grave of Soviet soldiers and civilians killed by Nazi aviation raids in 1941-43. In 1995, a wooden church in honor of St. John of Kronshtadt was built in P. (arch. E. Varakin.) The settlement has a culture house and library. Ref.: Authors
