Radofinnikovo, settlement

RADOFINNIKOVO, a settlement in Tosno District. Population: 932. Located in the upper reach of the Tosna River. It is connected by a motor road to the district center and other localities, and has communication to St. Petersburg and Veliky Novgorod by railroad. From the late 1940s till the late 1990s, a narrow-gauge railroad was operated there for industrial needs. The name is related to the estate of K. K. Rodofinikin, Director of the Asia Department of the Foreign Ministry, which was located in that vicinity. The settlement emerged in the Soviet period close to the railway station of the same name on the St. Petersburg-Novgorod line as a timber harvesting center. It has a regular street-type layout; the houses are one-storey, of wood or fiberboard. R. has a culture center and library. The wooden church of Ascension was built in the mid-1990s. Close to R. is a large gardening massif named “Radofinnikovo (6200 plots) established in 1985.
