ROZHDESTVENO, a village in Gatchina District. Population: 1900. Located on the Kiev Highway route at the interfluve of the Oredezh and Gryaznaya Rivers. Medieval burial mounds have been discovered in the environs of R. It is mentioned in Novgorod’s scribe roll of 1499/1500 as Gryazno (Grezno) village, the center of Greznevsky Nikolsky Pogost. Its wooden church of St. Nicholas the Miracle Worker was destroyed in the 17thc., during the Swedish rule. In the early 18th c., the Kurovitskaya estate including Gryazno village was owned by Crown Prince Alexis, son of Peter I. After the construction of the church of Nativity of the Blessed Virgin in 1713-1716, the toponym Rozhdestveno appeared. In 1738, it became a possession of St. Alexander Nevsky’s Monastery. In 1780 it became a town (Rozhdestvensk), the center of Rozhdestvensk Uyezd. In 1780-90, stone house construction was going on. In 1781-84, the stone church of Ascension was built (arch. F. I. Volkov; the building is extant as a ruin.) In 1787, Empress Catherine II visited R. on her way to Crimea. R. lost the status of a town in 1796, with the uyezd administration moving to Gatchina. In 1797, by the decree of Paul I., R. was donated to Court Councilor N. E. Yefremov. During his ownership, the generation of the estate complex began, closely related to the village’s history (see “Rozhdestveno”, V. V. Nabokov estate museum.) It became a popular dacha place in the 2nd half of the 19th c. In various years, R. was visited by actress V. F. Komissarzhevskaya, sculptor S. T. Konyonkov, and artist P. P. Konchalovsky. The village has a culture center and Rozhdestveno rural library. There are natural caves on the bank of the Gryaznaya River.
