SHUGOZERO, a settlement in Tikhvin District. Population: 2423. Located on the southern shore of Lake Sredneye. The name originates from the neighboring large lake, Shugozero. The settlement is connected by a motor road to Tikhvin Town and localities of the north-east of the district. In the environs of S., mounds of the early 2nd millennium A.D. have been surveyed; they are related to the Ladoga mound culture. The earliest information on Shugozero Pogost is dated late 15th c. The settlement in the place of the former estate of landowner Levsky appeared due to establishment of the adm. center of Kapshinsky District of Leningrad Oblast (established in 1927, abolished in 1963.) The settlement was formed by integrating several localities, which can be seen in the names of its quarters: Forestry ORS Community (ORS = Supply Dept.), RIK Community (RIK = district executive committee), Promkombinat, and Ryabovo. The houses in S. are mostly wooden, one- or two storey; there are also brick and panel houses, and social/cultural facilities. In the late 1970s - early 1990s, a block with comfortable five-storey buildings was erected. The settlement has a culture center, settlement library, children's library, and House of Children’s Creativity accommodating also a local lore museum. Since 1993, the church of the icon of Our Lady of Kazan offered services in a temporary building; in 2000-05, a new house was built for it (arch. A. M. Vinogradov.) In the local graveyard there is a common grave of pilots who were killed in action over Kapshinsky District during WWII. A chapel was erected there in 2001.
