Typographical and Publishing Business

Subject / Literature. Mass Media.

Typography and Publishing was developed comparatively poor in St. Petersburg gubernia, it was determined with the closeness to St. Petersburg, one of the most large scale printing and publishing centre. In 1904 there was a printing house in towns of Luga, Gatchina, Tikhvin and towns of Gdov and Narva that were included in the gubernia sructure that time. In 1910 there were three printing houses in Luga town, one printing house in Gatchina town, two printing houses in Tikhvin town (at that time it was in the Novgorod gubernia structure). Later a printing house appeared in Schlisselburg. They were small enterprises which mainly printed so-called display (forms, labels, advertisements etc) and sometimes they printed booklets and books with small volumes and printing. Both the gubernia printing house and the editorial offices of the newspaper "S. Peterburgskiye gubernskiye vedomosti" ("The St. Petersburg Gubernia News") were located in St. Petersburg. There were no any publishng houses in the St.Petersburg Gubernia. As the publishing houses were the local zemstvos (districts), medical, educational and other establishments which issued reports, journals etc, but they were mainly printed in St. Petersburg. In 1918 the typography was fully nationalized in the country. In 1923 in Leningrad the co-operative publishing house "Kirya" ("The Book") was opened, it issued the literature in Baltic and Finnish languages for the Finnish-speaking populations of oblast (in 1937 it was closed). After forming the Leningrad Oblast in the 1930s district printing houses were opened during organising the district newspapers net. Unused equipment was handed to new district printing houses from the Leningrad printing houses, specialists and skilled workers were sent there. During World War II many pinting houses were destroyed . From the 1950s till the 1960s new printing houses were regularly built (in Volkhov, Kingisepp, Kirishi, Luga, Mga, Sosnovo, Roshchino). They were equipped with new equipment. The publishing house net, created during this period, is the typography basis of the Leningrad Oblast now. In addition to district newspapers the district publishing houses published propagandistic and popular booklets based on the local materials. The bulk of books were published in the publishing house Lenizdat which supplyed both the city and oblast. During the reform process of the state-party administration the name and competence of the organ, which was in charge of typography and publishing houses, were changed: The Leningrad Oblast Association on Newspapers and Typography Affairs (Lenoblizdat), from 1941 it was the Board of the Publishing Houses and Typography Industry (Lenoblpoligrafizdat), from 1950 it was the Board on the Typography Industry Affairs and Trade at the Lenoblispolkom (Leningrad Oblast Executive Committee), from 1953 it was the Department of Publishing Houses and Typography Industry of the Culture Board of the Leningrad Oblast Executive Committee, from 1964 it became the Board on the Press of the Leningrad Oblast Executive Committee (it managed on printing houses of the Leningrad city and oblast). The Committees on Press and Mass Media were organized for the city and oblast separately in 1991; On the present days it is the Leningrad Oblast Committee for Information Policy and Telecommunication. 36 printing houses, including 10 state enterprises, were registered in the Leningrad Oblast in 2005. There is one printing house in Boksitogorsk town (the State Enterprise "The Boksitogorsk Printing House"), in Vilkhov town (MUA "The Volkhov Printing House"), in Kirishi town (Mynicipal Enterprise "The Printing House "Kirishi""), in Kingisepp town (the State Enterprise "The Kingisepp Printing House"), in Kirovsk (Printing House enters in MUP ID "Ladoga"), in Lodeinoye Pole town ( the Joined Stock Company "The Lodeynoye Pole Printing House"), in Luga town (the State Enterprise "The Luga Printing House" is a branch of PPP no.1), in Podporozhye town (MIPK "Svir Lights"), in Slantsi town (the State Enterprise "The Slantsi Printing House" is a branch of PPP No. 1), in Schlisselburg, and also in Sosnovo and Voiyekovo settlement. There are 3 printing houses (the State Enterprise "The Vyborg Printing House", the JSC "Karelia Print", "The Editorial Offices of the Newspaper "The Vyborg News" Ltd) in Vyborg town. There are 5 printing houses (the state enterprises "The Gatchina Printing House" and "Don Bosko", JSC "The North-West Printing Yard", "Profi-Centre"Ltd, "Latona" Ltd). There are no large-scale commercial publishing houses in the Leningrad Oblast. Publishing Houses "Krepky Oreshek" (Schlisselburg town), "Nevskaya Zarya" (Vsevolozhsk town), "Ladoga" (Kirovsk town), "Kirishi" printed mainly periodicals and advertisments. Private publishing houses usually are being during some years and issue no more than ten book titles: "Prana" (Tosno town), "The Justice" (Volkhov town), "Fantakt" and "Ankor" (Vyborg town) and others. Printing houses (for instance "The Volkhov Printing House") sometimes are the publishing houses. Publishing houses and editorial publishing departments work at Higher Education Schools. A number of organizations and establishments publish books and booklets for their own requirements and for sale. A number of books are published by the authors themselves.
