CENTRES OF SOCIAL AND CULTURAL ACTIVITIES (HOUSES AND PALACES OF CULTURE), cultural and educational institutions similar to clubs, the main aims of the centres are: to serve as social, cultural, educational, health and entertaining centres for the population; to create favourable conditions for mastering amateur arts. The necessary facilities for the centres functioning are auditoriums, buildings, musical instruments, light and sound equipment. Clubs differ according to the kind of place they belong: village halls (village, town clubs); village houses and palaces of culture (district, town clubs); centres of culture and leisure, centres of culture and art; culture and sports complexes, social and culture complexes, culture and leisure complexes. These institutions are aimed at cultural interests of definite professional, national and other social and demographic groups of population. There are 412 palaces of culture, houses of culture and clubs on the territory of the Leningrad Oblast, including 324 institutions in the countryside. On January 1st 2006 the number of amateur and arts groups, which were housed in these institutions, was 4382 (90149 members), including children’s groups – 2124 (38070 members). 388 institutions bear the names “narodny” (“people’s”), “obraztsovy” (“master”). The biggest houses and palaces of culture are: Town Leisure Centre “Rodnik” (“Spring”) (Volosovo Town), Cilture and Sports Centre “Zheleznodorozhnik” (“Railwayman”) (Volkhov Town), Information and Leisure Centre “Staraya Ladoga” (“Old Ladoga”), Club “Baltika” (“Baltic”) (Vyborg Town), Town House of Culture (Gatchina Town), Siversky Cinema and Culture Centre (Siversky Urban Settlement), Social and Culture Association “Feniks” (“Phoenix”) (Kirishi Town), District House of Culture (Kirovsk Town), Folk Arts House named after Y.P. Zakharov (Lodeynoye Pole Town), Town Culture Centre “Karnaval” (“Carnival”) (Priozersk Town), Palace of Culture “Stroitel” (“Builder”) (Sosnoviy Bor Town), Leisure Centre “Tikhvin” (Tikhvin Town), Palace of Culture (Pikalevo-1 Railway Station), Culture and Sports Complex “Nevsky” (Shlisselburg Town), etc. These institutions hold great creativity potential and cultural traditions, they have all necessary facilities to arrange leisure activities and meet cultural needs of the Leningrad Oblast population.
