FOLKLORE CENTRES. The program of culture development in the Leningrad Oblast is worked out taking into account multiethnic population and it stimulates creation of conditions for revival, preservation and development of native population’s national cultures and native languages. The Centre of Russian Folklore “Veresk” (“Heather”), housing a prize-winner children’s folklore studio “Veresk” (“Heather”), children’s singing and dancing group “Gusel’ky” (“Little Psaltery”), has been working since 1999 in Vyborg Town. The centre provides a folklore program in the town comprehensive schools. Different folklore groups and studios were formed and successfully work in the most oblast districts. They include: folklore studio “Domovushka” (Lodeynoye Pole Town), folklore theatre “Tsvety, Nash Kraiy!” (“Long Live, Our Land!”) (Tikhvin Town), folklore theatre “Yamgorod” (Kingisepp Town), folk choir at the Russian Folk Centre in Novoselye Village, Slantsi District and many others. Folk Centres organze international and regional festivals of national traditions, cultures and crafts “Mirovaya Derevnya” (“World Village”), “Pliusskiy Venok” (“Pliussa Garland”). In 1998 a Centre of Veps Folklore was founded in Vinnitsy Village, Podporozhye District, the aim of the Centre is to revive Veps culture, their old trades and crafts. The Centre houses a folk group “Armas”, Veps national puppet theatre, a museum, displaying Veps household items, was opened. National Veps Culture Centre also works in Vonozero Village, Lodeynoye Pole District. Since 1987 Veps festival “Derevo zhizny” (“Tree of Life”) has been held. In 1995 Izhora Culture Centre was opened in Vistino Village, Kingisepp Disrict , it houses Izhora folk groups “Ryubachka” (“Fisherwoman”), “Soikinskiye Napevy”. Izhora museum is opened. In 2004 Izhora festivity was held in Vistino Village. One of the Finnish Culture Centres is situated in Kalitino Village, Volosovo District. Such Finnish folk groups as “Rentyushky” (Rappolovo Village, Vsevolozhsk District), children’s group “Aurinko” (Kuzmolovo Village, Vsevolozhsk District) are well known. A booth theatre, giving performances in Finnish, was opened in Otradnoye Settlement, Kirov District. Since 1989 a national Finnish festivity “Uhannus” is annually held on the Leningrad Oblast territory. Karelian Folk Culture Centre was founded in Andreyevshchina Village, Lodeynoye Pole District. In 1999 Karelian Arts festival was held in Priozersk Town for the first time. Since 1991 Folklore and Ethnography Centre (under Russian Federation Culture Ministry) works in St.Petersburg, it accomplishes development of regional programs for creation of local (oblast) traditional folklore centres.
