SHEVCHENKO, Taras Grigoryevich (1814–1861), Ukrainian poet and artist. Shevchenko was a serf of P.V. Engelgardt, in 1831 he arrived with Engelgardt in St.Petersburg. Since 1832 Shevchenko worked as master V.G. Shiryaev’s assistant in the studio. In 1838 he was bought out with the help of V.A. Zhukovsky, K.P. Bryullov and others. Shevchenko graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts (1845). In 1840 his first book of poems “Kobzar’”(“Kobza Player”) was published. Later he wrote poems “Gaidamaky” (“Haidamaks”), “Slepaya” (“Blind Woman”), “Son” (“Dream”), “Eretik” (“Heretic”), “Kavkaz” (“The Caucasus”), “Maria”, some stories in Russian, etc. In 1847 Shevchenko was arrested in connection with the case of the Secret Kirill and Mefodiy Society and sent to exile as a soldier to Orenburg Gubernia with a prohibition to write and paint. He returned from exile in St.Petersburg in 1858. Shevchenko continued his literary activity and became close with editorial board of magazines “Sovremennik” (“Contemporary”) and “Iskra” (“Spark”). In 1860 he was elected a member of the Academy of Fine Arts Council in Engraving Department. In the end of 1830s Shevchenko several times visited Gatchina Town. There is his inscription on his poem “Dumka” (“Ballad”) (“It’s difficult to live …”) : “Gatchina Town, November 28, 1838”. Shevchenko’s drawing representing Priorate’s Palace (1839) still exists. The poet visited Kobrino estate belonging to Nadezhda Timofeevna Kartashevskaya, a sister of S.T. Aksakov (modern Kobrino Village, Gatchina District). In May 1860 Shevchenko visited N.G. Chernyshevsky in Lyuban Town, where he lived with his family in a country house. Shevchenko died in St.Petersburg and was primarily buried in Smolenskoye Cemetery. In spring 1861 he was reburied in the cemetery near Kanev Town (Ukrain).
