Charlemagne, Iosif Iosifovich (1782 - 1861), an architect, artist. He graduated from the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts in 1803, was a student of the architect Ch. Cameron. Charlemagne was the assistant of the architect L. Ruska and after 1817 he completed Ruska's buildings. Charlemagne served as an architect at the different departments. Charlemagne's mosr significant works in St. Petersburg: rebuilding the Lithuania Castle (1823-1826; it was not survived), the Cattle Stockyard (1823-1826), the Orlov and Novosiltsev alms-house (1834-1841; it was partly survived). Charlemagne participated in rebuilding the Tikhvin Convent of the Presentation in the Temple: according his project the Bell Tower with the Holy Gate and on-the gate-church of St. Catherine (1836-1837). In the 1840s Charlemagne completed building the Gostiny Dvor (Merchant's Yard) in New Ladoga Town. Iosif Iosifovich Charlemagne was buried in the Catholic cemetery in St. Petersburg.
