NOVGOROD GUBERNIA, adm. and territorial unit in the north-west of Russia in the 18th – early 20th centuries. It was established in 1727 to comprise five provinces of St. Petersburg Gubernia: Novgorod, Pskov, Velikiye Luki, Tver, and Belozersk. In the 1st half of the 1770s, N. G. underwent significant territorial changes. In 1776-96 it was converted into Novgorod Governorship, but restored in 1796. In 1802, after several of its uyezds were transferred to Olonets Gubernia, it got stable borders that survived till 1918. N. G. bordered St. Petersburg Gubernia in the west, Olonets in the north, Vologda in the east, Yaroslavl in the south-east, Tver in the south, and Pskov Gubernia in the south-east. It comprised 11 uyezds: Belozersk, Borovichi, Valdai, Demyansk, Kirillov, Kresttsi, Novgorod, Staraya Russa, Tikhvin, Ustyuzhna, and Cherepovets. The area of N. G. at the break of the 19th – 20th centuries was 118,500 sq. km, its population (according to the 1897 census) being 1,367,000. In 1918, five north-eastern uyezds were separated from N. G. to make Cherepovets Gubernia. The remaining territory contained Borovichi, Valdai, Demyansk, Kresttsi, Novgorod, Staraya Russa, and a new-established Malaya Vishera uyezds. In the 19th and early 20th cent., the territory of the current Leningrad Oblast contained lands of Novgorod, Tikhvin, and Ustyuzhna uyezds of Novgorod Gubernia.
