About the project
About the projectThe encyclopaedia is based on three general principles. The edition has the humanitarian character. It is accentuated on presenting objects of the culture heritage and different types of the cultural activity of museums, libraries, archives, theatres, creative institutions and festivals . The special attention is given to poorly known topics: ethnic culture, religious life, toponyms, local history study. The cultural life of the 20th - the early 21th centuries is widely presented in the encyclopaedia. References about towns, settlements and villages of the Leningrad Oblast are given in the historical and cultural perspective and they include description of history and culture monuments as well as profile organizations and institutions. There are 1160 articles in the encyclopaedia (about 60 author text sheets ). Besides the subject-event articles the encyclopaedia includes brief biographies of people who were closely related with culture of the Leningrad Oblast. Personal materials are one quarter of the whole amount of the edition (280 biography articles). The encyclopaedia includes 2312 illustrations which supplement articles and have the indissoluble connection with them. These are contemporary and archival photographs, painting and graphic art works. The cartographic materials section (135 positions) includes historical maps of the region as well as plan-maps of the modern administrative districts and main architectural ensembles (fortresses, monasteries, country estates). 1065 articles are accompanied by brief bibliographical reference lists. The bibliography for the encyclopaedia includes 2047 descriptions including about 700 references to the Internet resources. References to the Internet resources were firstly collected on such scale.
