Subject / Heraldry

The Gatchina District's coat of arms and flag are official approved symbols of the Municipal Union “Gatchinsky Rayon” (The Gatchina District) (they were approved with the decision of the Soviet of Deputies of the Municipal Union “Gatchinskiy Rayon” (The Gatchina District) of 23 April 2003, No.149 and No. 150). The heraldic description of the coat of arms: “Within the azure field that has dark red three times erosed tip which is crowned with silver colour, there is a silver building. The building is similar to an ancient temple. The building has a weathercock in the form of a bird of paradise on the spire. Below the building there are two divergent golden hunting horns. The golden coniferous sprout appears from the right horn and the golden ear appears from the left horn. The sprout and ear tilt each to other and frame the building.” The silver building is the symbol of estates and palace buildings which were being in the area of the district from the latter half of the 18th century to the beginning of the 20th century.
The golden hunting horns remember about emperor hunting grounds. The spruce branch is the symbol of the timber resources of the district and the ear is the symbol of the advanced farming. The flag is a rectangle sheet in the ratio of height to length 2:3. The flag reproduces the coat of arms drawing. The sheet consists of the dark blue (top) and red (bottom) horizontal stripes which are divided with the scaly wavy white stripe with three waves. In the centre of the dark blue stripe there are figures from the coat of arms: the white building with weathercock as the bird of paradise on the spire. Below the building there are two divergent golden hunting horns. On the each side of the building there is the spruce branch (to the flagstaff) and the ear, which are appears from the horns. The coat of arms was registered in the State Heraldic Register of the Russian Federation under No.1352, and the flag was registered under the No.1353.
