The Tikhvin District's coat of arms and flag are the official approved symbols of the Municipal Union “Tihvinskiy rayon” (The Tikhvin District) (the coat of arms was approved with the decision of the Soviet of Deputies of the Tikhvin District of 18 November 1998 under the No 361; flag was approved with the decision of the Soviet of Deputies of the Tikhvin District of 27 November 2002, under the No 402); The heraldic description of the coat of arms: “The shield is divided into azure and dark red fields. The fields are separated with an inverted silver arc. On the arc there is a black inscription "1773". In the upper part of the shield there is the nascent fan-shaped shine. In the down part of the shield there is the gold Emperor Crown with the purple hat (without bands). The crown is decorated with gems and pearls.” The coat of arms was created in 1772-73 after the appropriation of the status of a town to Tikhvin. The coat of arms was approved by Emperor on 10 July 1773. The flag is a rectangle sheet in the ratio of weight to length 2:3. The flag is horizontally divided into three unequal arched bands. The upper blue band is 3 / 9 of the length of the flag. On the band there is an image of the sun which appears from the upper edge of the flag. The white band is 1/9 of the length of the flag and the red band is 5/9 of the length of the flag. In the centre of the red band there is the yellow Emperor crown. The coat of arms was registered in the State Heraldic Register of the Russian Federation under the No.608, and the flag was registered under the No.1124.
