Clock Tower (Vyborg Town)

Subject / Architecture/Fortresses and other fortifications

Clock Tower (Vyborg Town). It was built in 1494 as bell tower of the Vyborg cathedral (it was destroyed in 1710). Originally it was tchetverik on octagonal base that was put from large boulders and crowned with spire and weathercock. In 1753 the first town clock with bell was placed on the tower (by this time the spire was lost). Inside the tower between flight of stairs there is a wooden shaft. The heavy weights got down along this shaft which activated a mechanism of the clock (keeping clock is 1848). The second octagonal (the third tier) was built in 1796 in Classicism (architect is I. Brockman). The bell tower was used as a fire tower. There was a watch area in the third tier. At present restoration of the cathedral is planning. For the time being the tower is interpreted as independent volume that is one of the dominating structure of the town.
