"Saint Fortress", the Drama and Puppet Theatre

“SVYATAYA KREPOST” (“SAINT FORTRESS”), a state drama and puppet theatre (4, Sportivnaya st., Vyborg Town). It was founded in 1982 by the Leningrad Oblast Executive Committee of the Deputy Council. From the foundation of the theatre its creative director is Y.E. Labetsky. The repertoire of the theatre includes more than 30 performances for children and adults (based on the works written by W. Shakespeare, F.M. Dostoyevsky, A.N. Ostrovsky, A.P. Chekhov, Sholom-Aleikhem, R. Tom, M. Kundera, R. Bradberry, performances for children “Tsvetik-Semitsvetik” (“A Flower With Seven Petals”), “Po Schyuch’emu Veleniyu” (“By a Wave of the Magic Wand”), “Mashen’ka I Medved’” (“Little Masha and a Bear”), “Urok Dlya Krasnoy Shapochky”(“A Lesson for a Red Riding Hood”), “Bloshiniy Tsirk” (“Flea Circus”, etc.). The main staff of the theatre was composed of the graduates from St.Petersburg Puppet Theatre department and Theatre Art Academy ( a group under guidance of S.K. Zhukov ). Later the graduates from Yaroslavl City and Nizhniy Novgorod City Academies of Drama joined the staff. In different periods of time the actors working in the theatre were: Y. Nikitin, T Belova, T. Tushina, N. Ustinov, G. Kikibush, etc. The theatre regularly tours towns and villages of the Leningrad Oblast and northwestern region, the actors give performances in the village centres of social and cultural activities and kindergartens of Vyborg District. The best theatre performances several times won the prize “Zolotoy Sofit” (“Golden Projector”). The theatre housed such international theatre festivals as: “Nordbaltpuppe” (“North Baltic Puppets”), “Novye Dny Teatrov Kukol Baltiyskikh Stran” (“New Days of the Puppet Theatres from Baltic Countries”), “KukArt-VI”.
