Bogolyubov, Aleksey Petrovich (1824-1896), an artist

BOGOLYUBOV, Aleksey Petrovich (1824, Pomeranye Village near Lyuban Town; modern Tosno District – 1896), seascape painter. His maternal grandfather was A.N. Radishchev. In 1841 he graduated from Naval Corps of Pages, served in the Navy. In the period 1850-53 Bogolyubov studied at the St.Petersburg Imperial Academy of Arts, his teachers were M.N. Vorobyev and B.P. Villevalde. He worked as a painter at the Navy Headquarters. In the period 1854-60, receiving Imperial scholarship from the Academy, he travelled round Europe, worked in the studios of well known painters. In 1858 Bogolyubov became an academician of painting, in 1860 – a professor of the Imperial Academy of Arts. Since 1863 he belonged to a court of the Heir to the Throne Nikolay Aleksandrovich, since 1866 – to a court of Grand Duke Aleksandr Aleksandrovich, a future Emperor Alexander III. Bogolyubov had great influence on Grand Duke’s sensitivity to art, he helped in assembling of Grand Duke’s collection of paintings. In 1873 he joined the Itinerants, the association of movable art exhibitions (Peredvizhniki) and became a member of its administration board. Since 1873 he lived in Paris. Bogolyubov was buried in St.Petersburg in Malookhtinskoye Cemetery (the grave doesn’t exist). During the years of training at the Imperial Academy of Arts Bogolyubov went to paint in the open air to the suburbs of Vyborg Town, Luga Town, etc. During his visits to Russia from Paris he visited Emperor Alexander III who lived in Gatchina Town.
