BRODSKY, Isaak Israilyevich (1883/84 – 1939), artist, collector. In the period 1896–1902 he studied at the Arts College in Odessa. In the period 1902-08 he studied at the St.Petersburg Imperial Academy of Arts, in I.Y. Repin’s class. In the period 1909-11 Brodsky lived abroad receiving Imperial scholarship from the Academy. His works from prerevolutionary period, influenced by poetics of art nouveau, are full of lyricism. After 1917 Brodsky became a founder of officious Soviet art. In the period 1932-39 he worked as a professor at the Institute of Painting, Architecture and Sculpture, in 1934 he became a director of the Institute. Brodsky was an Honoured Art Worker of the Russian Federation (1938). Among his students one can find V.A. Serov, A.I. Laktionov, Y.M. Neprintsev, etc. In the Soviet period Brodsky specialized in historical and revolutionary subjects, painted portraits of Soviet public figures. He was a master of “grand style” and compositions with many figures. He gathered a big collection of Russian painting (more than 200 pictures). Brodsky died in Leningrad. In his flat a memorial museum was organized in 1949. While studying at the Academy, Brodsky many times visited the northern coast of the Gulf of Finland to paint in the open air. In 1910s he visited L.N. Andreyeva in Vammelsuu Village on the Karelian Isthmus, in the summer months in 1915 he stayed and worked in Siversky Urban Settlement, in 1936 – in Yukki Village on Tokhkolodskoye Lake.
