Ioann (Ivan Matveyevich Snychev;1927–1995) metropolitan. He studied at the Technical College in Orsk; from 1945 he was in the city of Buzuluk, firatly as a lay brother, then he was a subdeacon of Bishop of Chkalovsk and Buzuluk Manuil (Lemeshevsky), then he become a deacon and he become a priest in 1948. In 1951 he graduated from the Saratov Seminaty, in 1955 he graduated from the Leningrad Theological Academy having the degree of Doctor of Theology . In October of 1956 he was professed as a monk, he lectuterd in the Minsk Seminary. From 1957 he was a secretary of Archbishop Manuil; he took part in the work on the book «Catalog of the Russian Archiereuses from 1896 to 1956» and on the book «Topography of Cathedras and Suffragancies of Archiereuses». In 1959 he was assistant of the inspector and the teacher of the Saratov Seminry. From September 1960 he worked in the Pokrovsky Cathedral in Kuibyshev, in 1961 he was the hegumen and from 1964 he was the archimandrite. He was the Bishop of Syzran (1965), he was the Bishop of Kuibyshev and Syzran (1969), he was the Archbishop (1976). He was appointed the Metropolitan of Leningrad (from 1991 St Petersburg) and Ladoga on 20 July 1990. He was the Head of the Liturgical Commission of Holy Synod, took part in the work of the Canonization Commission. On 12 August 1990 he sacrified the Kazan Church in Zelenogorsk, the first revived church under his authority. During his rule the numbers of churches were increaced in about three times in the Eparchy of St Petersburg, first monasteries were opened, including monasteries in the Leningrad Oblast (the Konevsky Monastery of the Nativity of the Mother of God, the Cheremenetsky Monastery of St John the Theologian and others). More than 200 priests and deacons were ordained by Ioann. Magazine ""Register of the Eparchy of St Petersburg"", newspaper ""Orthodox St Petersburg"" and others were published during his rule. He has the degree of Master of Theology (1966 and the degree of Doctor of Theology (1988). He was the author of works on the ecclesiastic-history subjects, works on the history-patriotic subjects and sociopolitical speeches. Name ""Ioann of St Petersburg"" became the symbol of the struggle against the neo-renovation, uniatism, ecumenism. He died in St Petersburg and was buried in the Nikolskoye Cemetery of the St Alexander Nevsky Lavra.
