IPPOLITOV-IVANOV, Mikhail Mikhailovich (real family name Ivanov) (1859, Gatchina Town – 1935), composer, conductor, teacher, public figure in music. He studied at Estonian school at Gatchina Lutheran Church, where he also studied music, sang in an amateur choir, learnt to play the violin. In 1882 he graduated from St.Petersburg Conservatory, a class of composition (his teacher was N.A. Rimsky-Korsakov). In the period 1882-93 he lived in Tiflis (Тbilisi), where he was a head of Tiflis Branch of the Russian Musical Society and of its Musical School. Since 1884 he also worked as a conductor at Tiflis Opera Theatre. In 1893 Ippolitov-Ivanov became a professor at Moscow Conservatory, in the period 1905-22 he worked as Consrvatory director (since 1919 – chancellor). In the period 1924-25 he worked as a chancellor and professor at the Georgian Conservatory. Among his students one can find R.M. Glier, Z.I. Paliashvili, S.N. Vasilenko, A.V. Goldenweizer. In the period 1899–1906 Ippolitov-Ivanov worked as a conductor of Moscow private operas, since 1925 as a conductor at the Bolshoi Theatre. Ippolitov-Ivanov created four operas, a symphony, symphonic pieces of music and suites, choruses, including spiritual ones, love songs. He is an author of a Harmony Textbook. In 1922 he became a People’s Artist of the USSR. Ippolitov-Ivanov often visited Gatchina Town. In 1880s in Gatchina Town he met М.А. Balakirev, G.Y. Lomakin, a music teacher at the Orphanage S.A. Zaitsev and other public figures in music. In 1930 the first musical school in the Leningrad Oblast was opened in Gatchina, in 1939 the school was named after Ippolitov-Ivanov (ref. Gatchina children’s musical school named after M.M Ippolitov-Ivanov ).
