Leonova, Darya Mikhaylovna ( 1829-1896), an actress

LEONOVA, Darya Mikhaylovna (1829, from other sources 1834 – 1896), opera and drama actress, chamber singer, teacher. Since 1849 she studied at St.Petersburg Theatre School. Since 1850 she performed as a singer and a drama actress at Aleksandrinsky Theatre. Since 1852 she took lessons from M.I. Glinka, in 1856 she took lessons from D.Meyerbeer in Berlin and D. Ober in Paris. Leonova toured Germany, France, Belgium and Poland. In the period 1858-73 she performed at Mariinsky Theatre in St.Petersburg and at Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow. In 1873, having left the stage, she gave concerts and toured a lot. Leonova had a beautiful contralto voice and a great acting talent. Her repertoire included 26 opera parts (the best parts in the operas composed by M.I. Glinka, A.S. Dargomyzhsky, M.P.Musorgsky, N.A. Rimsky-Korsakov) and numerous songs and love songs. In the period 1888-92 she worked as a teacher at Moscow Theatre School. Since 1893 she lived in St.Petersburg and worked as a tutor. Leonova several times gave chamber concerts in Gatchina Town and Vyborg Town. She was buried in Tikhvin Cemetery in Alexander Nevsky Laura (modern Necropolis of Masters of Arts in Alexander Nevsky Laura ) in St.Petersburg.
