MATYUSHIN, Mikhail Vasilyevich (1861–1934), artist, musician, writer, publisher. He graduated from Moscow Conservatory (1881), worked as a violinist in St.Petersburg Court Orchestra (1881-1913). He studied at the High School of Painting at the Emperor’s Art Encouragement Society (1894-98), in the studio of I.F. Tsionglinsky (1903-05), at the School of Painting and Drawing of Y.N. Zvantseva (1906-08). In 1906 Matyushin married Y.G. Guro, together with his wife he organized Artists’ Association “Soyuz Molodezhy” (“Youth Union”) in 1910, issued a same name magazine. Since 1911 Matyushin worked on the theory of space and “the fourth dimension”; he issued several futuristic books. He was the author of music to Guro’s plays and to the opera “Pobeda nad Solntsem” (“Victory Over the Sun” ) (words by A.Y. Kruchenykh, stage design by K.S.Malevich, put on in 1913). In the summer 1913 the first Congress of Russian Futurists took place at Matyushkin’s country house in Uusikirkko Village (modern Polyani Settlement, Vyborg District). In the period 1918-26 Matyushkin worked as a teacher at the Painting Department of the Academy of Fine Arts, there he organized “a studio of space realism”. He worked as a head of the Department of Integral Culture at the State Artistic Culture University (1923-26). Matyushkin issued “Colour Reference Book” (1932). In 1910s he spent summer months in Bolshaya Izhora Urban Settlement. He died in Leningrad and was buried in the Cemetery near Martyshkino Railway Station. Chekanova, Olga Aleksandrovna
