The Church of the Tikhvin Icon of the Mother of God (romanshchina Village, Luga District)

Subject / Religion. Church/Orthodox churches

The Church of the Tikhvin Icon of the Mother of God (Romanshchina Village, the Luga District). The original wooden church of St. Prophet Elijah was built in 1679 as an estate church of the landowners Yelagins. It was demolished in 1840. During 1770-1776 a new stone church, in the style of the 17th century small estate churches ("vosmeric on chetverik"), was built using E.N. Yelagin's money near the estate. The detachment stone bell tower with high piramidal roof was connected with a wooden passage with the church. Admiral I.I. De Traverse was buried at the church altar. From 1938 the church did not work, on 19 October 1939 it was closed. The church was transferred for a "Cultural institution". In 1943 the church was opened again by the priest Vasily Sergeyev (He was the church dean until 1947). From the 1940s the church has been registered on the book as the monument of Architecture. On 2 October 1962 it was closed once and for all. From 1963 the church was used for an agricultural warehouse. Buildings of the church (including the dome with the cross) and the bell tower (without high piramidal roof) are survived. In the early 2000s the church was transferred to the Luga district Cossacks, restoration works are done.
