Korpovo caves

Korpovo caves are a natural object in the Luga district. It is located on the outskirts of the Luga elevation that is to the south of Luga Town on the steep bank of the Obla River, not far from Oblovskoe Lake. The Caves took their name from Korpovo Village of the Luga uyezd that is not far away. Thay have partly artificial origin. The beginning of the Korpovo caves is the formation of the grotto under the influence of underground water. Then the quartz sand was extracted for glass industry. During the Great Patriotic War the caves were the shelter for partisans. In present time it is a popular palce for tourists.
