ZABORYE, a settlement in Boksitogorsk District. Population: 1468. It is located on the left bank of the Lid River. It is adjacent to the station of the October Railroad of the same name. The Olyeshi-Somino motor road having access to the Novaya Ladoga-Yaroslavl route extends across Z. The narrow-gage Zaborye-Krasny Bor railroad was active until the 1990s. There are architectural monuments, mounds dated break of the 1st and 2nd millenniums A.D., close to Z. The settlement appeared as a station construction camp during the construction of the St. Petersburg-Vologda railroad in the early 20th c. In the Soviet period, it became an important center of timber harvesting and processing in the east of the Leningrad Oblast. The settlement is divided by the railroad into two parts, the northern and the southern ones. Its wooden houses are of individual and type patterns. During WWII, from the late 1941, the eastern onshore leg of “The Road of Life” began in way of Zaborye Station and the neighboring Podborovye Station. A memorial plaque is installed on the railway station building. In 1989, a stele in honor of Hero of the Soviet Union A. N. Godovikov, a pilot killed in action near Z. in 1942, was opened in the settlement. There is also an obelisk in honor of the townsmen who perished in WWII. Z. has a culture center and a library. In 1997–2006, the wooden church of the Icon of the Mother of God "Quick to Hearken" (arch. E. P. Varakin.) was constructed. Yegorov, Sergey Borisovich
