Grogory (Chukov) (1870-1955), metropolitan, clergy figure

Grigory (Nikolay Kirillovich Chukov; 1870-1955), Metropolitan, clergy figure, Doctor of Theology. Nikolay Kirillovich Chukov was born in a peasant family. In 1889 he graduated from the Olonets Ecclesiastical Seminary, in 1895 he graduated from the St. Petersburg Ecclesiastical Academy. In 1897 he became a priest and he became an archpriest in 1907. In 1895 he was appointed a supervisor of church-parish schools of the Olonets Eparchy. Nikolay Kirillovich Chukov has done a lot for the spiritual education of Karelia, developing the system of schools and libraries. During 1911-1918 he was the rector of the Olonets Ecclesiastical Seminary; he was arrested and exiled from the gubernia, settled in Petrograd. During 1918 -1921 Grigory (Chukov) was the dean of the church of the Petrograd University, then he became the dean of the Kazan Cathedral. From 1920 Grigory (Chukov) was the rector of the Petrograd Theology Institute , a vice-chairman of the Petrograd and Gubernia Orthodox Parishes Society Administration. He was sentenced for the imprisonment. During 1924-1930 and 1932-1935 Grigory (Chukov) was the dean of the St. Nicholas Cathedral of the St Nicholas Cathedral of the Epiphany, then he was exiled to Saratov City. He became a widower, and then he was professed as a monk. From 14 October 1942 he became the Bishop of Saratov, from 26 May 1944 he was Archbishop of Pskov and Porkhov, the manager of the Leningrad and Novgorod Eparchies, from the end of 1944 he managed three eparchies else. On 7 September 1945 Grigory was appointed Metropoitan of Leningrad and Novgorod. Metropolitan Grigory assisted to working more then 39 churches in the liberated territory of the Leningraf Oblast, during 1944-1945 he sent priests to work in them. During 1945-1948 he assisted to opening churches in the east of the Leningrad Oblast (in Tikhvin Town, Vsevolozhsk Town, Novaya Ladoga Village, Sablino Settlement, Chernoye Village, Rogozha Village). Metropolitan Grigory helped to restore suffered buildings of a church in Yelizavetino Settlement, the Cathedral of the Apostle Paul in Gatchina Town and others. From 1946 he headed the Constituent Committee of the Patriarchate and the work on the rebirth of theological schools. Grigory died in Moscow , was buried in St. Petersburg under the Cross Church in the Holy Spirit wing of the Alexander Nevsky Lavra. On 25 August 1961 his remains were transported into the crypt under the Holy Trinity Cathedral.
