Vitali, Ivan Petrovich (1794-1855), sculptor

VITALI, Ivan Petrovich (1794–1855), sculptor, professor at St.Petersburg Imperial Academy of Arts (since 1842). His teacher was his father – sculptor Pietro Vitali in A. Triscorni studio and in the Academy (1806-18). Since 1818 he lived and worked in Moscow. In 1841 he returned to St.Petersburg where he and his students made more than 300 statues and reliefs for the St.Isaac’s Cathedral. Vitali was the author of the monument to Paul I in Gatchina Town (1851; its copy was erected in Pavlovsk Town in 1872). He was buried in St.Petersburg in Tikhvin Cemetery of Alexander Nevsky Laura (art workers’ necropolis).
