Subject / Heraldry

The Vyborg Town's coat of arms and flag are the official approved symbols of the Municipal Union “Vyborgskoye gorodskoe poselenie” (the urban-type settlement of Vyborg) (they were approved with the decision of the Soviet of Deputies of the Municipal Union of 28 March 2006, No.57). The heraldic description of the coat of arms: “The shield is divided into two parts: dark red field and azure one. In the dark red field there are three crowns. In the azure field there is letter "W" . In the center of the shield there is the narrow belt. All figures are gold. The shield is supported by two angels that are dressed in dark red clothes with gold belts and cross-belts dressed crosswise. Wings of the right angel are azure and wings of the left angel is gold.” The coat of arms was granted to the town by Swedish Kings in the 15th century. The first known image of the coat of arms was on the town's stamp of 1448. As special kindness of the Swedish Crown to the town of Vyborg in the beginning of the 17th century two angels as shield-holders were added into the coat of arms. Angels were placed within the coat of arms in the original and rare style: not on the each sides of the shield (as usual) but they appear from behind the top of the shield. The flag is a rectangle sheet in the ratio of height to length 2:3. The flag consists of three horizontal bands: upper band is red, middle one is yellow and down band is dark blue. The width of the middle band is 1 / 5 of the height of the flag. Red and blue bands are equal. There are three yellow crowns placed in a row in the red band. In the centre of the blue band there is the letter «W». The coat of arms of Vyborg town was the official symbol of the Vyborg district from 21 April 1993 to 28 March 2006 . The flag was the official symbol of the Vyborg district from 4 December 2003 to 28 March 2006. The coat of arms was registered in the State Heraldic Register of the Russian Federation, No.145, and the flag was registered under No.1692.
